Literacy Skills and
Dyslexia
There was a time when problems with literacy
skills were not recognised as a neurological condition
- those individuals who struggled with reading and
writing were, to be
frank, considered stupid.
Thankfully those days are long gone.
Today, dyslexia is recognised as a
neurological condition that causes problems with letters and
words. Those who are dyslexic often have other conditions to
manage such as
- memory limitations
- weak auditory and visual processing skills
- poor personal organisation skills
- co-ordination challenges
- attention disorders.
Dyslexia can cause difficulties with
learning in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and,
somtimes, numeracy and language. This is unsettling for
adults and children alike and can trigger feelings of low self
esteem.
Left untreated dyslexia can lead to the development of
behavioural problems and alienation from friends and
family.
Some dyslexic people have strong oral or creative skills and
many have multidimensional thinking skills - the same
skills that Albert Einstein used to establish the Theory of
Relativity!
Dyslexia is not a sign of low intelligence or laziness nor
is it the result of impaired vision. It is important to
appreciate that dyslexia is not just a literacy issue but a
neurological condition that affects the way information is
processed.
Dyslexia is not a synonym for
illiteracy.
Dyslexia is sometimes associated with related conditions
such as dyspraxia, ADD, dysphasia and dyscalculia.
Now dyslexia is recognised tools, tips
and techniques have been designed to enable dyslexic
people to improve their literacy
skills, better manage letters, words and language
and improve their self esteem as a
consequence.
Brain Gym® Wales offers a creative way of
teaching dyslexic adults and children to become successful
learners, improving their literacy skills, which in turn
allows them to grow in confidence.
